Autumn Term 1

We are learning to ... 

  • Break speech down into words.
  • Link letters to sounds.
  • Use the sounds we know to help us to spell. 
  • Start to spell some red tricky words.
  • Combine words to make sentences.
  • Leave spaces between words.
  • Begin to use captial letters and full stops.
  • Use capital letters for names and I. 

We will apply our skills to help us to write descriptions of the characters and to retell events in the correct order. 

 

Autumn Term 2

The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark

We are learning to...

  •  Compose a sentence orally before writing it.
  •  Join words using and
  •  Use plural noun suffixes –s and -es.
  •  Punctuate sentences using a capital letter and a full stop.
  •  Use capital letters for names of people.
  •  Spell words containing phonemes already taught. 

We will use our skills to write setting descriptions and we will learn about informational writing in order for us to write our own information reports about a nocturnal animal. 

 

Spring Term 1

  • Punctuate sentences using a capital letter and a full stop, some question marks and exclamation marks
  • Join words and clauses using and
  • Some accurate use of the prefix un-
  • Some accurate use of suffixes (where no change is needed to the root of the word) e.g. ed, -ing, -er, -es

We will use our writing skills to create character descriptions and to innovate the story with our own characters.

We are learning to...

  • Punctuate sentences using a capital letter and a full stop
  • Some use of question marks when needed
  • Join words and clauses using ‘and’ and some use of but
  • Add suffixes to verbs where no change is needed to the root e.g. - ed, -ing, -er and -est

We will use our writing skills to write from one of the character's perspective and we will recap informational writing also. During this half term we will also learn the poem 'At the Zoo'.
