Gikoro Primary, Uganda

We are proud to be with twinned Gikoro Primary in Kisoro, Uganda since 2024. This remote primary school is hidden on the hills overlooking the volcanoes that stretch from Uganda to Rwanda . Our Year 2 children learn about life in this area during their geography work and Year 4 study the gorillas, who live in the Bwindi Rainforest in their literacy work. Working on conservation projects with Gikoro is an important part of our Global Citizenship Eco Schools work.

Denis Agaba, who works for the Wildlife Clubs of Uganda, delivers conservation projects across schools in the Kisoro area. He has supported us with project work with Gikoro Primary and using funds raised during our Harvest festival, has planted crops with the children in the grounds of Gikoro school. These crops are harvested by the children and then used in the schools kitchens or are sold to fund conservation trips to the Bwindi rainforest.

Denis also uses a pedal powered cinema to educate children about local wildlife. Mountain gorillas, who live close to the school are an endangered species and although the children live in such close proximity, many children are not aware of these beautiful animals, or their importance to local ecosystems.
